Keir Starmer has chosen to deploy the HMS Dragon, a cutting-edge £1 billion Destroyer class ship, to the Middle East amid escalating tensions involving Donald Trump, Israel, and Iran. The decision comes after RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus suffered damages in a suspected Iranian drone incident.

Following the incident, where the damage was deemed limited by Cypriot officials, the UK Government announced the dispatch of HMS Dragon to enhance regional security. The HMS Dragon, recognized as one of the Royal Navy’s most advanced vessels, was selected by Starmer from among two options considered.

Renowned for its capabilities, the HMS Dragon is equipped with the Sea Viper anti-air missile system and is distinguished by the Welsh Dragon emblem on its bow. With a length of 152.4m and a displacement of 8,000 to 8,500 tonnes, the ship’s primary function is to protect other ships by detecting and neutralizing enemy threats.

The Sea Viper missile system onboard the HMS Dragon can defend against supersonic targets and includes 72 missiles, CAMM launcher cells, Phalanx CIWS, and 30mm guns. Manned by a crew of 200, the ship excels in long-range target acquisition, helicopter maintenance, and weapon operations.

In addition to its military prowess, the HMS Dragon gained fame for its appearance in the 2021 Bond film “No Time To Die.” The ship’s counterpart, HMS Duncan, although a Type-45 Destroyer like the Dragon, is not as advanced and is currently stationed at Portsmouth Naval Base.

Both ships share similar features, including the Sea Viper system, Sampson radar, and impressive missile capabilities. HMS Duncan, costing approximately £400 million, contributes to various missions from defense against air attacks to humanitarian aid efforts.
