“UK to Extend PIP Benefits Duration Starting April 2026”

Published on

The duration of benefits for individuals applying for Personal Independence Payment (PIP) will be prolonged starting in April to address the existing backlog.

PIP stands as the primary disability allowance for individuals within the UK workforce. Eligibility for PIP hinges on the need for additional assistance with day-to-day activities due to health issues, disabilities, or mental health conditions.

Notably, PIP eligibility is not solely determined by the medical condition but by its impact on daily life. Presently, PIP awards can be as brief as nine months. However, effective from April 2026, there will be an extension to a minimum of three years for most new PIP applicants aged 25 and above, with the potential for a subsequent five-year extension upon review if entitlement persists.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has indicated that this measure aims to free up healthcare professionals, allowing for more in-person assessments and reassessments.

These operational adjustments are distinct from the Timms Review, focusing on the role of PIP, eligibility criteria for daily living and mobility components, and assessment procedures.

PIP comprises two components: the daily living and mobility segments. The standard daily living rate is £73.90 per week, while the higher rate stands at £110.40 weekly.

Regarding mobility, the standard rate is £29.20 per week, with the higher rate set at £77.05 weekly. It is essential to notify the DWP promptly of any changes in health status or conditions.

Individuals who are terminally ill typically receive PIP automatically without the need for an assessment. Under special rules for terminal illness, the initial award lasts three years before undergoing review.

PIP is accessible for individuals aged over 16 but below the state pension age. If PIP is claimed and the recipient reaches state pension age, the claim usually continues uninterrupted.

In specific cases, a new claim may be made upon reaching state pension age if eligibility for PIP was established within the previous 12 months.
