An 80-year-old woman has been sentenced to prison for committing disturbing acts against a young boy.
Hazel Templeton, aged 80, was found guilty of multiple indecent assaults on the victim during the 1980s. The victim reported that these assaults led to trust issues and had a profound negative impact on his life. Templeton was convicted of four counts of indecent assault after a trial.
According to court proceedings at Newport Crown Court, the defendant coerced the victim into engaging in sexual activities and also had sexual encounters with him on two occasions. The victim, at the time of the offenses, attempted self-harm, as reported by Wales Online.
Templeton, currently held at HMP Eastwood Park, had prior convictions for indecent assaults and gross indecency with a child. In 2025, she received a two-year and nine-month sentence at Laganside Crown Court in Belfast.
In a statement read by prosecutor Jeffrey Jones, the victim expressed his emotional turmoil following the guilty verdicts. He described ongoing struggles with stress, shame, and trust issues caused by the defendant’s actions over 40 years ago.
The victim highlighted the lasting impact of the defendant’s abuse, emphasizing the erosion of trust in relationships and the emotional trauma endured. He revealed feeling groomed and manipulated, leading to suicidal thoughts during his teenage years.
During mitigation, Sol Hartley mentioned the defendant’s lack of criminal history outside of these offenses and her involvement in community roles. He also noted her anxiety about her elderly partner’s well-being during her imprisonment.
In sentencing, Judge Celia Hughes acknowledged the psychological harm inflicted on the victim and criticized Templeton for her lack of remorse. The judge condemned the defendant’s exploitation of the victim’s innocence for her own gratification, highlighting the lasting damage caused to the victim.
Templeton received a three-year and nine-month prison sentence, to be served concurrently with her existing term. Additionally, she was placed under indefinite sex offender notification requirements.
