Nigel Farage is set to visit Mar-a-Lago on Friday to personally convey the opposition to the Chagos deal directly to Donald Trump. This move comes amidst escalating tensions between the US president and Sir Keir Starmer, jeopardizing the controversial agreement regarding the disputed islands.
The leader of Reform UK revealed the dinner plans during Guido Fawkes’ Save Chagos Boat Party, where he expressed growing confidence in the campaign to annul the deal.
Farage emphasized the importance of the meeting, stating, “President Trump is starting to grasp the situation, but I will be dining at Mar-a-Lago tomorrow night to reinforce our stance.”
Characterizing the Mauritius agreement as “the worst deal in history” and a “complete betrayal,” Farage urged supporters to persist in their efforts, emphasizing the winnability of the cause.
In a strong statement, Farage highlighted the significance of challenging the government’s foreign policy direction, asserting their successful pushback.
The journey to Florida by Farage coincides with strained relations between the US and the UK, with Trump openly criticizing the Prime Minister over the Middle East crisis and the Chagos issue. Trump’s dissatisfaction stemmed from Starmer’s initial reluctance to allow American military operations to utilize RAF bases, including Diego Garcia.
Trump’s criticism of Starmer escalated, with the US president referring to him as a “loser with no future,” marking a significant departure from his previous public comments about the Labour leader.
Trump expressed his disdain for the Chagos deal, labeling it as an “act of great folly” during discussions in the Oval Office. He had previously condemned the agreement on Truth Social, branding it as a “foolish act.”
Despite initially denying access, Starmer eventually relented, granting limited US military operations at RAF Fairford and Diego Garcia. However, this concession failed to alleviate tensions, leading to a deterioration in the relationship between the two leaders.
The escalating conflict between the US and the UK underscores the ongoing discord in their diplomatic relations, with repercussions extending to various global issues.
