Trump Considers Foreign Campaign in Cuba Amidst Crisis

Published on

Donald Trump has set his sights on achieving another ambitious foreign policy goal following the joint US-Israeli strike on Iran, this time in Cuba. The Trump administration has been engaged in a week-long conflict with Iran, resulting in the deaths of top Iranian officials as the US bombards the Middle Eastern nation with nearly $900 million of munitions daily.

Despite being elected on a platform emphasizing domestic issues, President Trump is now considering launching a third foreign campaign after addressing the US’s current priorities. In a recent interview with CNN, Trump expressed confidence that Cuba’s government is on the verge of collapse due to oil restrictions imposed by his administration following the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro. The President indicated that Cuban leaders are eager to negotiate a deal to alleviate the situation.

Trump revealed plans to deploy his Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, to Cuba, stating that the country is ripe for a deal. He emphasized the urgency of the situation, citing the country’s 50-year history of strained relations. The Cuban population is currently grappling with severe power cuts resulting from fuel shortages exacerbated by the US blockade that began in January.

Before Maduro’s capture, Cuba was receiving a significant amount of oil from Venezuela, satisfying a substantial portion of its energy needs. The aviation fuel shortage has also impacted the tourism industry, a crucial source of revenue for the island. While the pressure on Cuba’s government appears significant, the shortages have primarily affected ordinary citizens, pushing them to resort to burning firewood for cooking and limiting transportation and power generation due to fuel scarcity.

There are speculations that the US strategy aims to incite a revolution in Cuba, given the challenging conditions faced by the population. However, Havana has not confirmed any ongoing negotiations with the Trump administration regarding the situation.
