A woman made a bold move to Spain, selling all her possessions, including her house and business, to pursue a new life abroad. Brittnee Dawley, 32, decided to relocate from Houston, Texas, after feeling a stronger sense of well-being while visiting Madrid and Barcelona in June 2024.
Choosing to settle in Valencia, Brittnee took up a 12-month student visa to immerse herself in the Spanish language. Despite arriving without accommodation arranged, she quickly found a two-bedroom apartment to share with a fellow visa holder after viewing multiple options.
By making this leap, Brittnee managed to significantly reduce her monthly expenses, cutting her living costs from around $5,000 in the U.S. to just $2,150 in Valencia. She now spends her days studying Spanish intensively and aims to obtain her Dele Spanish Diploma by June 2026.
Reflecting on her decision, Brittnee expressed contentment with her new lifestyle in Spain, emphasizing the slower pace, the focus on enjoying daily activities, and the sense of peace she has found. She highlighted the contrast with her previous hectic work schedule in the U.S., where she ran her own business and felt constant pressure to succeed.
Despite missing her family in the U.S., Brittnee is fully embracing her Spanish adventure, improving her language skills through interactions with locals and formal studies. She plans to explore opportunities for a digital nomad or self-employment visa once she completes her current course.
Brittnee’s experience serves as a testament to her adaptability and personal growth in a new environment, leading her to consider Spain as her long-term home unless circumstances require her return to the U.S.
