“Starmer to Release Key Documents on Mandelson-Epstein Links”

Published on

Keir Starmer is preparing to release the initial batch of documents concerning Peter Mandelson’s assignment as the UK’s ambassador to Washington. This move follows the government’s agreement last month to fulfill MPs’ requests to disclose numerous records regarding Lord Mandelson’s appointment in 2024. The release is aimed at addressing queries about the vetting process and the extent of knowledge regarding Mandelson’s connections to Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted pedophile.

The documents, scheduled for release after Prime Minister’s Questions, are expected to shed light on the vetting procedures. The initial disclosure will contain the due diligence report on Mandelson’s appointment prepared by the Cabinet Office, previously shared with Starmer. Mandelson, 72, who was dismissed as ambassador last year, was arrested in February by the Metropolitan Police on suspicion of public office misconduct for allegedly leaking confidential information to Epstein.

Today’s documents are anticipated to feature a due diligence report submitted to the Prime Minister before his approval of Mandelson’s appointment. They may reveal details of the relationship between Mandelson and Epstein, including a news report from 2023 suggesting Mandelson stayed at Epstein’s New York residence during the latter’s imprisonment. This disclosure represents only the beginning of the extensive document release compelled by Parliament.

Cabinet minister Darren Jones mentioned that a substantial number of documents would be made public, although it is expected to be a fraction of the total papers demanded by Parliament. The government is committed to transparency and accountability regarding Mandelson’s connections to Epstein, with further document tranches planned for release in the future. Recent revelations led to Starmer dismissing Mandelson from the ambassadorial role due to his association with Epstein.

Mandelson’s controversial past includes resignations as Trade and Industry Secretary and Northern Ireland Secretary over financial and political improprieties. He was later reinstated as Business Secretary under Gordon Brown’s administration. Mandelson, currently under police scrutiny for allegedly leaking government secrets to Epstein, was recently relieved of his bail conditions as the investigation continues. The Met Police returned his passport following speculation surrounding his arrest, with Mandelson vowing to cooperate with authorities.

The impending document release is a significant step in addressing concerns surrounding Mandelson’s appointment and his association with Epstein. The government is set to unveil the initial tranche of files post-Prime Minister’s Questions, providing insight into the vetting process overseen by the Cabinet Office. However, certain information deemed sensitive by the Metropolitan Police and communications between Mandelson and senior officials are expected to be withheld for now.
