A mother from Scotland, Tammy Croston, who lost vision in one eye due to four brain tumors, believes they were caused by a contraceptive injection. Croston, 47, began using the Depo-Provera injectable contraceptive in 1999 and intermittently used it for several years until she stopped upon the discovery of four non-cancerous tumors in her skull.
Following complications during surgery to remove the brain tumors, the mother lost sight in her right eye. Croston is among 11 women in Scotland pursuing legal action against Pfizer, the manufacturer of Depo-Provera, seeking compensation. Due to jurisdiction laws, her London-based solicitor could not handle the case, leading her to seek the support of her local MSP.
About 2,500 women in the US are currently suing Pfizer over similar issues. Croston is scheduled to meet with Liberal Democrat MSP Willie Rennie to discuss her case further.
In an interview with the Daily Record, Croston expressed concerns about the lack of awareness regarding the side effects of Depo-Provera and emphasized the need for better information for women considering the contraceptive. Studies have indicated a heightened risk of developing meningiomas, benign tumors in the brain, after prolonged use of the medication.
Law firms in London are investigating cases for potential claims in the UK, but jurisdiction rules have posed challenges for Scottish women seeking legal recourse. The restrictions stipulate that Scottish residents can only participate in group litigation filed in English courts under specific conditions, hindering progress for those affected.
MSP Willie Rennie expressed eagerness to meet with Croston to understand her experiences and ensure appropriate legal representation for affected women in Scotland. He highlighted the need for equal access to justice regardless of geographic location within the United Kingdom.
Pfizer reiterated its commitment to patient safety, stating that Depo-Provera has been approved in numerous countries with a well-established safety profile over the past three decades, serving millions of patients effectively.
