A recent investigation revealed that a passenger onboard a British Saga cruise, Trevor Gilks, sustained a severe spine injury during a violent storm and subsequently passed away due to inadequate care at sea. The unfortunate incident occurred when the Saga Spirit of Discovery encountered rough seas off the UK coast in late 2023, leading to numerous injuries among passengers, including Mr. Gilks.
Mr. Gilks, 85 years old, was on holiday with his wife, who uses a wheelchair, when he fell from his chair as the cruise ship experienced turbulent conditions. Despite being promptly assisted back into his chair and provided with a neck collar for several hours before undergoing an X-ray, proper procedures for suspected spinal injuries, such as using a spinal board, were not followed.
Following the X-ray examination, which was inconclusive due to unclear images, Mr. Gilks began experiencing numbness and loss of sensation in his legs. As his condition worsened, a doctor recommended his evacuation from the ship to prevent paralysis. However, due to the hazardous conditions for helicopter transfer, the captain decided to wait until the ship docked in Portsmouth before transferring Mr. Gilks to a hospital.
Unfortunately, Mr. Gilks succumbed to his injuries on November 8, with the cause of death attributed to a complete cervical spine injury. The investigation report highlighted delays in identifying the severity of his spinal injury, leading to suboptimal treatment that may have affected the outcome. Saga Cruises expressed regret for the distress caused to Mr. Gilks’ family and emphasized their commitment to safety.
The report also criticized the decision to sail through rough seas in the Bay of Biscay without effective challenge, leading to propulsion issues and subsequent shutdown of the propellers. Recommendations were made for cruise ships to be equipped with stability-measuring electronic devices to prevent similar incidents in the future.
In response to the findings, Saga Cruises swiftly implemented enhancements to their policies and procedures, aligning with the recommendations put forth by the Marine Accident Investigation Board. The tragic accident underscored the importance of vessel safety, crew decision-making, and medical response protocols in the cruise industry, urging all stakeholders to learn from this unfortunate event.
