Iran has acknowledged its involvement in a recent attack on two oil tankers departing from Iraq. Startling videos and photos captured the moment one of the vessels erupted in flames and smoke, creating a harrowing scene on Thursday.

As per Farhan al-Fartousi, Iraq’s director general of the General Company for Ports, the assault occurred while the tankers were within Iraqi waters. He stated, “Two foreign tankers carrying Iraqi fuel oil were targeted by unknown assailants in territorial waters, resulting in fires breaking out.”

The official later disclosed that Iranian boats loaded with explosives had struck the ships. Despite the rescue of 38 crew members, at least one casualty has been reported.

These events coincide with Iran’s warning of a potential surge in oil prices to $200 per barrel, a development that could significantly impact fuel costs domestically.

In the aftermath of the attacks, Iraqi authorities confirmed the cessation of all operations at oil ports. This incident follows a recent strike on an Iranian naval vessel near Bandar Abbas, allegedly as part of a joint US-Israeli operation.

Against the backdrop of heightened tensions, a decline in vessel traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has been observed, reflecting concerns over further Iranian actions.
