The most severely impacted by the wintry weather will be individuals in the northern regions, where weather forecasts indicate 17cm of snowfall in the western part of Scotland on Friday. Additionally, there will be snow showers in the northwest regions of England and Wales.

A snow and ice warning from the Met Office is active for central Scotland, starting from midnight until 9am on Friday morning. The national weather agency warns of blustery wintry showers affecting central and northwest Scotland, with snow accumulation of 2-5 cm expected across the area and up to 10 cm in higher elevations.

Residents within the alerted areas are advised to prepare for potential traffic disruptions and should carry essential items in their vehicles. The Met Office emphasizes the importance of planning travel routes, allowing extra time for journeys, and staying informed about road closures or delays.

The forecast for the night includes heavy rain clearing southeast across England and Wales, with clear spells, wintry showers, and persistent rain and snow over high ground in Scotland. The outlook for Friday predicts a cold and windy day with a mix of sunshine and blustery showers, potentially leading to more persistent rain and snow in some areas, particularly over northern hills.

The cold spell is anticipated to persist into the weekend before temperatures start to rise next week. Looking ahead to March 17-26, the Met Office suggests a period of settled weather for much of the UK, with wet and windy conditions likely at first, especially in the northwest. However, a shift towards more settled conditions is expected from midweek onwards, with the possibility of overnight frost and fog, alongside pleasant spring sunshine during the day.

Although the duration of the settled conditions remains uncertain, there are signals indicating a potential return of showers or rain later in the period, with the southern regions possibly being more susceptible to this.
