After surprising fans with her decision to step back from her role on The Great British Bake Off, Prue Leith’s departure was initially thought to be a pursuit of a more leisurely lifestyle. However, the renowned culinary expert, aged 86, has recently disclosed that her exit from the popular TV show in January was primarily due to health concerns she had been increasingly troubled by. During an interview on The Shift podcast, she admitted that she had started noticing a decline in her balance and stability.
“I’ve been worried because I’ve noticed I’m not as steady on my feet as I used to be,” Prue revealed. This realization dawned on her while filming outdoors for the show she co-hosts with Paul Hollywood, Noel Fielding, and Alison Hammond.
She recounted an incident during filming when she struggled with physical tasks that she had previously taken for granted. “We were not just judging cakes – they wanted us to dance around this uneven field. While Noel and Paul managed fine, I realized I was at risk of falling embarrassingly. That was the moment I had to admit my limitations,” she explained.
Reflecting on her dynamic with Paul Hollywood, Prue shared, “Since I joined Bake Off, Paul has playfully teased me about our significant age gap of more than two decades. His jokes about my age used to amuse me, but lately, I’ve come to acknowledge their truth.”
“If I had stayed on the show, I might have needed a ramp to access my Winnebago. Paul’s teasing might have been more accurate, leading him to stop,” she added.
Despite her challenges, Prue reminisced about a joyful memory from the previous year when she danced to the tunes of a steel band in the iconic Bake Off tent.
On the prospect of returning to the American Baking Show, Prue hinted at the possibility during an appearance on Davin McCall’s podcast Begin Again. She highlighted the demanding schedule of The Great British Bake Off but did not rule out participating in the American version if the opportunity arose.
As Nigella Lawson stepped in to fill Prue’s role on The Great British Bake Off, the door may not be completely closed for Prue’s television appearances, especially considering her potential involvement in the American Baking Show if it gets renewed.
