Jessie Buckley Wins Best Actress at Oscars

Published on

Jessie Buckley emerged victorious at the Oscars, clinching the Best Actress award for her portrayal of Agnes in the film “Hamnet.” The character is depicted as the wife of William Shakespeare, grappling with the tragic loss of their son.

Securing her first Oscar win, Jessie expressed gratitude towards her husband, family, and daughter, Isla, highlighting the significance of winning on Mother’s Day. She also extended thanks to Chloe Zhao, the director of “Hamnet,” and Maggie O’Farrell, the book’s author.

In an emotional speech, Jessie described the accolade as the utmost honor, expressing disbelief at her achievement and dedicating the award to the complexities of a mother’s heart.

Leading up to the Oscars, Jessie swept various prestigious awards including the SAG Award, BAFTA, Critics’ Choice, and Golden Globe for her performance in “Hamnet.” Her consistent success positioned her as a strong contender for the Oscar, with Rose Byrne being her closest competition, having also secured a Golden Globe win.

At the Oscars, both Rose and Jessie emerged victorious in their respective categories, with Rose nominated for Female Actor in a Comedy and Jessie nominated for Female Actor in a Drama. Notably, the Oscars do not segregate awards by genre, leading to a single winner per category unless a tie occurs.

During the ceremony, a tie was witnessed in the Best Live Action Short category, resulting in dual winners. Such occurrences are rare and must adhere to strict voting rules for parity. The history of ties in the Best Actress category was referenced, notably in 1969 when Katharine Hepburn and Barbra Streisand shared the honor.

Elsewhere at the event, Amy Madigan claimed the Best Supporting Actress award, marking her first Oscar win at the age of 75. Meanwhile, Sean Penn secured the Best Supporting Actor award, although he opted not to attend the ceremony, with last year’s winner, Kieran Culkin, accepting the award on his behalf.

A milestone was achieved with the inaugural presentation of the Oscar for Best Casting, acknowledging the crucial role of casting directors in filmmaking. The award was bestowed upon Cassandra Kulukundis for her work on “One Battle After Another,” with heartfelt appreciation extended to those who paved the way for this recognition.
