“Government Announces Massive Internet Upgrade for 1M Homes”

Published on

The government is set to provide over a million British households with a complimentary internet upgrade, as indicated by a recently unveiled interactive map showing the eligible areas.

Project Gigabit, a new initiative by the government, aims to offer lightning-fast gigabit-capable broadband to communities that are currently underserved by internet providers. The program specifically targets properties and businesses in regions not covered by existing broadband plans.

The government has set a goal for 99% of homes and businesses to have access to gigabit-capable internet by 2032. Launched in 2021, Project Gigabit is now progressing at its fastest pace, with over 750 premises being connected daily during the ongoing phase of the nationwide rollout.

Ministers have disclosed that Openreach, in partnership with the government under a contract worth up to £1.2 billion, is leading the effort to bring full-fiber connectivity to more than 297,000 homes and businesses in rural areas. Additionally, multiple contracts with other companies have been signed to support Project Gigabit.

The comprehensive upgrade project, Project Gigabit, will benefit various locations across the UK. A map highlighting areas in England and Wales involved in the initiative has been made available to the public.

Under the broader project, the Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme offers eligible households vouchers valued at up to £4,500 to assist in the installation of gigabit-capable broadband services. The scheme is currently open to new projects that are not covered by existing commercial plans or Project Gigabit contracts.

Liz Lloyd, the telecoms minister, remarked, “Many rural communities have long struggled with slow internet speeds, hindering their online activities. The daily upgrades funded by the government are making a significant impact, benefiting households and businesses that would have otherwise been left behind.”
