The aviation authority of the United Arab Emirates took the step of temporarily shutting down its airspace as a precautionary measure in response to heightened concerns about potential missile and drone attacks originating from Iran, as confirmed by the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA).
Following a thorough evaluation of security and operational risks, and in close collaboration with relevant domestic and international bodies, the decision to close the airspace was made to ensure the safety of flights, air crews, and the UAE’s territorial integrity amidst rapidly evolving security dynamics in the region.
The GCAA emphasized that safeguarding airspace safety and upholding the UAE’s sovereignty are its primary concerns. Meanwhile, the government verified that the nation’s air defenses are actively addressing threats from Iran involving missiles and drones.
Dubai International Airport was reported to be temporarily closed to air traffic after a recent drone attack near the airport’s fuel tank. Flight Radar data indicated that some flights were being held, with others rerouting to alternative airports in the vicinity. However, subsequent local reports confirmed that air traffic operations had returned to normal throughout the UAE’s airspace.
