The Princess of Wales is scheduled to participate in a beloved event that is a regular feature on her calendar today. This morning, she will be at Mons Barracks for the annual St Patrick’s Day Parade with the Irish Guards.
Kate, as the colonel of the Irish Guards, customarily joins the St Patrick’s Day parade, distributing sprigs of shamrock and typically dressed in a green coat. In the past, she used to attend the parade with her husband Prince William, the former colonel of the Irish Guards.
In a notable moment during the 2013 event, Kate faced a near mishap when her shoe’s heel got caught in a drain cover while pregnant with Prince George. She struggled to free her shoe until William came to her aid, ensuring she didn’t lose her footing.
Last year, Kate made a poignant comeback to the parade after missing it in 2024 due to health issues. During the event, she awarded medals to soldiers, handed out shamrocks, and even bought drinks for the regiment to celebrate the occasion.
Following the salute, Kate engaged with soldiers and their families, even sharing light-hearted banter about her husband’s beard. She was appointed Colonel of the Irish Guards in December 2023, taking over from William as he assumed the role of Colonel of the Welsh Guards.
Unlike other colonels who often participate in the Trooping the Colour parade on horseback in full military attire, Kate has always ridden in a carriage and not worn military uniform for the event.
The Princess also interacted with section commanders about her husband’s beard, remarking on its temporary nature. Kate became Colonel of the Irish Guards in December 2023, succeeding William, who took on the role of Colonel of the Welsh Guard upon becoming the Prince of Wales.
At Trooping the Colour, colonels usually wear full military uniform, with some even taking part in the parade on horseback. But Kate has only ever taken part in a carriage and has not worn military uniform for the event.
