A statement from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has reported a total of 15 cases of meningitis, all requiring hospitalization, with four cases confirmed as menB infections. The UKHSA identified the menB strain as the cause of the ongoing outbreak in Kent, where two individuals—a sixth form pupil and a university student—have tragically succumbed to the illness.

According to the latest update from the government agency, as of 5 pm on March 16, 2026, there have been 15 cases of invasive meningococcal disease linked to Canterbury, Kent. All cases have resulted in hospitalization, with four cases confirmed as meningococcal B infections, leading to two fatalities.

In response to the outbreak that claimed the lives of two students, three schools have confirmed cases of meningitis. Among the deceased is Juliette, a year 13 student from Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School in Faversham, described by the school’s headteacher as a compassionate and bright individual who will be deeply missed by the school community.

The headteacher expressed profound sadness over Juliette’s passing, highlighting her kindness, intelligence, and enthusiasm for school activities. Juliette was known for her caring nature, genuine friendships, and infectious positivity, leaving a void in the school community.

The other fatality was a student from the University of Kent. Reports indicate that some individuals hospitalized due to the outbreak have been placed in induced comas.
