Keir Starmer has committed the UK to taking actions aimed at diminishing the influence of Putin in a meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky. The British Prime Minister hosted the Ukrainian president at Downing Street and reaffirmed the UK’s support for Kyiv, emphasizing the unwavering determination. Earlier, Zelensky was also received at Buckingham Palace as part of his visit to the UK to finalize a new defense agreement.
During their meeting at Downing Street, the PM expressed admiration for the bravery and fortitude of the Ukrainian people throughout the conflict, emphasizing the importance of staying focused on Ukraine and ensuring Putin does not benefit from other global conflicts. Zelensky expressed gratitude to the UK for its support during the challenging winter period, highlighting the ongoing need for swift action and continuous diplomatic efforts.
In a separate development, the UK and Ukraine entered into a new defense pact aimed at enhancing global security. The partnership will combine Ukrainian expertise with the UK’s industrial capabilities to produce and supply drones and other defense assets. Additionally, the UK will allocate £500,000 towards establishing an AI center of excellence in Kyiv to leverage technology for military advantage.
The meeting between Starmer and Zelensky takes place amidst heightened global tensions due to the Middle East crisis, which has impacted energy prices and benefited Putin despite existing sanctions. The US recently eased sanctions temporarily to allow the purchase of Russian oil already on ships, prompting concerns over international responses to the conflict.
