Inmates at HMP Bronzefield have reportedly been teasing Constance Marten, known as the “Killer mum,” for her new role in the prison. Marten, a former socialite and daughter of an aristocrat, along with her boyfriend Mark Gordon, were sentenced to 14 years in prison for the death of their newborn daughter due to gross negligence. Prior to their arrest, the couple had fled to evade social services after their previous four children were taken into care.
Now, Marten, aged 39, is working as a unit cleaner at the Ashford, Surrey facility, where other notorious inmates like Lucy Letby and Beinash Batool are held. She has reportedly faced mockery from fellow prisoners over her modest £20 weekly job.
Her responsibilities in prison include cleaning floors and maintaining Unit 4. According to a source quoted by The Sun, Marten has been playfully labeled as “the poshest Mrs Mop in the country” by the other inmates. Despite the teasing, Marten has chosen to keep a low profile and stay in her cell whenever possible, declining other job opportunities within the prison.
Marten was born into a wealthy family in 1986 on the vast Crichel estate in Dorset. Her father, a former page to Queen Elizabeth II, abandoned his fortune and family for a simpler life in Australia when Marten was nine. After going on the run with Gordon and their child, Marten was eventually discovered rummaging through trash for food, a stark contrast to her privileged upbringing.
The path that led Marten to prison began when she met Gordon at a shop in Tottenham in 2014. The couple later held an unofficial wedding ceremony in Peru, which was not legally recognized in the UK.
