“Global Nuclear Arms Race Intensifies Amid Ongoing Conflicts”

Published on

Tensions are rising in the ongoing Middle East conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran, heightening concerns about the possibility of nuclear warfare. Various conflicts around the world, including the Russia-Ukraine confrontation, Israel-Hamas clashes, and military confrontations in Afghanistan and Pakistan, create a volatile situation where nations with nuclear capabilities are engaged in dangerous military activities.

In today’s information-driven world, keeping up with current events is vital. For those interested in knowing which countries possess nuclear arsenals, a comprehensive breakdown is available. As reported by the Express, the following countries have nuclear weapons:

– Russia
– United States
– China
– France
– United Kingdom
– Pakistan
– India
– Israel
– North Korea

These nine nations collectively hold around 12,300 warheads as of early 2026, with over 9,614 actively maintained in military stockpiles for potential deployment via various means such as missiles, naval vessels, aircraft, and submarines, according to the Federation of American Scientists (FAS) 2025 report on World Nuclear Forces.

While the total number of warheads has significantly decreased from the Cold War era, experts anticipate a gradual increase in the coming years due to advancements in modern weaponry. The exact count of nuclear weapons held by each country remains confidential, leading to uncertainties in estimates. Notably, Russia is estimated to possess approximately 5,459 nuclear warheads, with a portion retired but still intact for dismantling.

The United States, on the other hand, maintains an active stockpile of 3,700 nuclear warheads, distributed strategically for potential deployment. Combined, Russia and the US control the majority of the world’s nuclear weapons inventory and stockpiled warheads available for military use.

While other nuclear-armed states possess fewer weapons, some are expanding their nuclear programs. Notably, China, North Korea, India, Pakistan, France, and the UK are reportedly increasing their stockpiles. France’s President announced plans to expand the nation’s nuclear arsenal, emphasizing a continued reliance on nuclear weapons for the foreseeable future.

Despite global efforts to reduce nuclear weapons, the pace of disarmament has slowed in recent years. Nations like China, North Korea, India, Pakistan, France, the UK, and potentially Russia are believed to be enhancing their nuclear stockpiles. The US, in its ongoing conflict with Iran, has depleted its nuclear weapons stockpile, including Tomahawk missiles, raising questions about potential restocking decisions.
