“Duchess of Cambridge Wows in Diplomatic Fashion”

Published on

The Duchess of Cambridge showcased her diplomatic fashion sense as she and Prince William formally greeted the President and First Lady of Nigeria during their official state visit to the UK. Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his wife, Oluremi Tinubu, are currently in the UK for a three-day visit, culminating in a state banquet at Windsor Castle hosted by the King later tonight.

William and Kate commenced the day’s proceedings by welcoming the Nigerian president and his wife at the luxurious Fairmont Windsor Park hotel, situated on the outskirts of Windsor Great Park, before accompanying them to the town center for an official meeting with the King and Queen.

For the occasion, the duchess donned a stylish grey coat dress by emerging British-Nigerian designer Tolu Coker. Her ensemble was complemented by a grey Jane Taylor hat adorned with a white bow, and she also wore earrings once belonging to the late Diana, Princess of Wales.

Subsequently, the Nigerian dignitaries were greeted by Charles and Camilla under the warm spring sun, following their escort to a red-carpeted platform outside the Windsor and Eton Riverside train station by William and Kate.

The streets were adorned with green and white Nigerian flags alongside Union flags, with a large Royal Standard flying proudly atop the Round Tower of Windsor Castle. Camilla was elegantly attired in a pink wool crepe dress by Fiona Clare, paired with a pink beret-shaped hat by Philip Treacy and the late Queen’s Cartier flower clip brooches.

The King sported a traditional morning suit, carrying a black top hat, while William, mirroring his father’s attire, opted for a blue waistcoat without a hat. The monarch warmly greeted the president with a handshake, showcasing the Household Cavalry soldiers as part of the grand display of soft power by the royal family, with over 1,000 troops in attendance.

Following this, the King and Queen will invite their guests to view a special exhibition featuring Nigerian-related items from the Royal Collection in the Green Drawing Room.

Later on, the King will hold an audience with the President at Windsor Castle, and the Nigerian visitors will privately visit St George’s Chapel, Windsor, to lay a floral wreath on the Tomb of Queen Elizabeth II. The highlight of the evening will be a lavish state banquet at Windsor Castle.

Thames Valley Police confirmed the implementation of extensive security measures in Windsor due to the event coinciding with the escalating Middle East crisis.

The President and the First Lady arrived in the UK as scheduled yesterday via a Nigerian Air Force flight and were welcomed at Stansted Airport by the deputy lieutenant of Essex, Mark Bevan, on behalf of the King.

Despite the tragic suicide bombings in Borno state, Nigeria, on Monday, President Tinubu denounced the terror attacks, expressing solidarity with the victims and affirming Nigeria’s resilience against fear.

This marks the first Nigerian state visit to the UK since 1989 when Queen Elizabeth II received military ruler General Ibrahim Babangida in London. The current visit, tailored to accommodate Mr. Tinubu’s Muslim faith at the end of Ramadan, will not include the customary lunch with the King during the day.

The adjusted itinerary will feature Charles hosting an afternoon audience with the President, and Mr. Tinubu will privately break his fast at sunset before attending the state banquet with the King and Queen. Meanwhile, the First Lady, Remi, a Christian and ordained Pentecostal pastor, will join the celebrations during the Islamic holiday of Eid-al-Fitr.

The President’s visit aims to bolster the UK’s position as a leading hub for African business, coinciding with the announcement of new job opportunities as Nigerian companies expand their operations in the UK.

This prestigious event unfolds amidst the recent scandal involving the King’s brother, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, who faced arrest on suspicion of sharing confidential reports with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
