In Kent, there has been a recent surge in meningitis cases, with the total now reaching 20. Health Secretary Wes Streeting has described the outbreak as ‘unprecedented’. TV personality Lisa Snowdon, who recently completed a challenging trek in the Moroccan desert for Meningitis Now, emphasized the importance of not ignoring symptoms and seeking medical help promptly.

Having battled viral meningitis in 2010, Lisa Snowdon shared her ordeal, urging people not to underestimate the signs of the disease. She highlighted the deceptive nature of meningitis symptoms, which can mimic flu-like conditions, leading to misinterpretation. Lisa emphasized the value of being informed about the disease and recommended utilizing the resources available on the Meningitis Now website.

Reflecting on her personal experience, Lisa admitted to initially mistaking her symptoms for a common flu or winter virus. Despite feeling progressively worse over three weeks, it was hosting a Christmas event that made her realize the severity of her condition. Subsequently, she sought medical attention and was diagnosed with viral meningitis and glandular fever.

Lisa Snowdon stressed the importance of raising awareness about meningitis, dispelling misconceptions that it only affects babies. She highlighted the potential severity of the disease and its complications, emphasizing the need for vigilance and prompt medical intervention.

Even after 15 years, Lisa continues to experience lingering symptoms from her bout with meningitis. Her journey with the disease inspired her involvement with Meningitis Now, where she now serves as president. Additionally, she participated in the Sahara Trek to raise funds for the organization, alongside other survivors and individuals who lost loved ones to meningitis.

The Sahara Trek, which has raised over £80,000 for Meningitis Now so far, remains open for donations until April. Lisa Snowdon expressed gratitude for the support and encouraged others to contribute to the cause. Looking ahead, she contemplates future charity adventures, possibly including a trek on the Great Wall of China.

Lisa highlighted the emotional and inspiring moments shared with fellow participants during the Sahara Trek, underscoring the resilience and camaraderie displayed throughout the journey. She stressed the importance of listening to one’s body and not ignoring warning signs, drawing from her own life-changing experience with meningitis.
