The late John Stapleton, a prominent figure in the broadcasting industry with ties to BBC and ITV, has left an estate valued at £4.5 million following his passing. Stapleton, who succumbed to Parkinson’s disease at the age of 79, signed his will in 2017 prior to his wife’s death. The probate papers unveiled that his estate had an initial value of £5,536,228, which was later adjusted to £4,544,801 after accounting for various deductions.
Originally intended for his wife, the substantial fortune is now set to be inherited by his son, Nick. Stapleton, a well-known presenter and journalist recognized for his work on programs like BBC’s Watchdog and GMTV, faced a battle with Parkinson’s disease and pneumonia before his peaceful passing in a hospital in September last year.
During his extensive career, which spanned nearly five decades and included coverage of significant events such as the war in Kosovo and multiple US elections, Stapleton disclosed his Parkinson’s diagnosis in October 2024. Despite the challenges posed by the condition, he maintained a positive outlook, emphasizing his determination to adapt and cope with the disease.
In a poignant statement, Stapleton’s agent, Jackie Gill, confirmed his passing, attributing it to complications arising from Parkinson’s disease and pneumonia. Reflecting on his battle with Parkinson’s, Stapleton expressed a pragmatic attitude, acknowledging the permanence of the condition while emphasizing the importance of remaining optimistic and following medical advice.
