Asthma sufferers in the UK have received a cautionary alert due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The combination of wet weather in the UK and the looming threat of increased energy bills stemming from the Middle East crisis poses a significant risk to millions of individuals with respiratory conditions, warned Asthma + Lung UK. Exposure to dampness and mold can trigger severe asthma attacks, raise the chances of chest infections, and result in hospitalization.
A recent survey conducted by the charity revealed that nearly 20% of individuals with lung conditions struggle to afford adequate heating for their homes. The Met Office reported that this winter has been one of the wettest on record, with England experiencing its eighth wettest season. These conditions create ideal conditions for indoor mold growth, a known trigger for a third of patients with lung conditions, according to Asthma + Lung UK.
The presence of mold and fungi in homes can exacerbate symptoms of diseases like asthma and COPD, leading to breathlessness and potentially fatal flare-ups requiring hospital intervention. Approximately 17% of respondents indicated difficulties in maintaining sufficient warmth in their homes. Dr. Andy Whittamore, a clinical lead at Asthma + Lung UK, expressed concerns over the impact of damp and mold on public health even before the energy bill concerns arose.
To address the issue of dampness and mold, Asthma + Lung UK recommends ventilation by opening windows and doors, avoiding indoor clothes drying, and maintaining a minimum home temperature of 18°C. The organization also urges the Government to promptly implement the £15 billion Warm Homes plan aimed at reducing energy costs and upgrading residential properties. Long-term exposure to mold has been linked to the development of asthma in previously healthy individuals, especially children, as well as other lung conditions like aspergillosis.
Dr. Whittamore emphasized that a moldy environment increases the risk of chest infections, colds, flu, and rhinitis.
