An official has raised concerns about a significant nuclear incident following a missile explosion in close proximity to an operational nuclear reactor. Russia’s representative, Mikhail Ulyanov, criticized the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for its handling of the incident near Iran’s Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant.
Both Russia and Iran confirmed that a projectile struck the grounds of the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, situated 750 kilometers south of Tehran on the coast of the Persian Gulf.
The IAEA was informed by Iran that a projectile hit the plant premises, but no damage or injuries were reported. Ulyanov expressed doubt about the adequacy of the IAEA’s response, emphasizing the serious risk posed by the missile exploding near the nuclear reactor.
IAEA chief Rafael Grossi emphasized the importance of exercising maximum restraint during conflicts to avoid the potential for a nuclear accident. He highlighted the need to prevent attacks on nuclear facilities, as any strike could result in the release of radioactive material into the environment.
The Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, operated by Russian technicians using Russian-made uranium, plays a critical role in the region’s energy supply. The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran confirmed that no damage occurred as a result of the strike, attributing the incident to the United States and Israel according to reports.
The situation at the plant remains under control, with no radiation leaks or significant impact reported. The proximity of the plant to the Persian Gulf raises concerns about potential contamination of the water supply, which could have far-reaching consequences for the Gulf States.
