A Mastiff-Great Dane crossbreed named Junior, which severely injured a young girl named Luna-Ann Forsyth in a vicious attack, is set to be euthanized. The incident occurred on August 6, 2023, in Nuneaton when Junior, who belonged to Emma Callaghan, escaped confinement and attacked Luna-Ann while she was visiting with her mother and sibling. The court described the attack as sudden, unprovoked, and terrifying, resulting in Luna-Ann being scarred for life.

Emma Callaghan was previously convicted of being in charge of a dangerously out-of-control dog, Junior. Michael Barnett, a dog behavior expert, presented a report to the court indicating Junior’s stress and non-aggressive behavior during an assessment. The court was shown footage of Junior refusing treats and displaying signs of distress.

The court deliberated on the severity of Luna’s injuries, with conflicting opinions on the classification of the bite. PC Craig Leach, a dog legislation officer, argued that the bite was more severe than initially assessed. Junior has been in police kennels for nearly three years due to being reactive towards other dogs.

Despite efforts to assess Junior’s behavior and propose potential management strategies, the court concluded that Junior’s unpredictability and past aggression posed a significant risk to public safety. Consequently, Junior was ordered to be put down. Emma Callaghan, who did not appear in court, received a suspended prison sentence, rehabilitation, and community work as part of her sentencing. No restrictions were placed on her future dog ownership.

The court highlighted the challenges of reintegrating Junior into a home environment after an extended period in kennels and emphasized the importance of public safety in making the decision to euthanize the dog.
