Football enthusiasts who unlawfully enter stadiums without tickets will face extended bans and substantial fines under a new law set to take effect this Sunday. This legislation stems from disgraceful incidents during the Euro 2020 final, where hundreds of fans forcibly entered Wembley Stadium. Engaging in activities like tailgating, using counterfeit tickets, or posing as stadium personnel can result in fines reaching £1,000 and a five-year prohibition from attending football events, as announced by the Home Office.

The Unauthorised Entry to Football Matches Act will be implemented prior to the Carabao Cup Final featuring Arsenal and Manchester City at Wembley. Policing Minister Sarah Jones emphasized the importance of ensuring a safe and secure environment for football fans, aiming to prevent the chaotic scenes witnessed at Wembley five years ago.

Approximately 2,000 ticketless individuals breached security at Wembley before the England-Italy match, prompting a review by Baroness Louise Casey. The review highlighted numerous instances where lives were put at risk, labeling the situation a “national shame.” Baroness Casey stressed the dangers of unauthorized entry, citing the safety implications for genuine fans and stadium staff.

The upcoming law will address the absence of a specific legal penalty for unauthorized access to football matches, preparing for the co-hosting of Euro 2028 by England and Wales. These measures aim to mitigate risks and ensure a secure environment for fans to relish top-tier football matches safely.
