A couple in Bohermeen, County Meath, Ireland, is facing the demolition of their 6,220 square-foot home that they constructed without proper planning permission back in 2006. Chris and Rose Murray are now advocating for the property to be donated to a housing charity rather than torn down by the local council.

Despite being denied planning permission by Meath County Council, the Murrays proceeded to build a home that exceeded the approved size. After years of legal battles, the council has taken possession of the property and initiated the demolition process, despite the couple’s objections and their pursuit of a human rights case.

Mrs. Murray expressed her distress over being evicted from their home, emphasizing that they could have been left homeless. She recounted how her family was abruptly forced out of the house, with her son having to hastily pack belongings and her daughter being denied access to retrieve her clothes.

While acknowledging their wrongdoing in building the house without permission, the Murrays are vehemently against its demolition, suggesting that it should be preserved and repurposed. Despite their legal efforts, a High Court judge upheld the demolition orders, leading to the destruction of the property.

The demolition operation, carried out by a security team and supported by local authorities, proceeded as planned, with the property reduced to rubble. Meath County Council confirmed that they followed court orders by facilitating the removal of personal belongings and household items in coordination with family and community representatives.

In response to the ongoing legal proceedings, a council spokesperson stated that they are complying with the court’s directives and working alongside law enforcement to execute the demolition.
