Paul Nicholas, a former star of EastEnders, made a surprising appearance on This Morning. The seasoned actor ventured into a new acting role in 2024, playing the role of the old Major in John Cleese’s stage adaptation of the iconic BBC series Fawlty Towers.
At 81 years old, Paul appeared on the show in July of that year, discussing his project with John Cleese and one of his co-stars in a conversation with presenters Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary.
Paul, best known for his role as Vincent in the 1980s TV sitcom Just Good Friends, has also been seen in various soap operas, including his recent portrayal of Gavin Sullivan in EastEnders.
Gavin, known as the biological father of Sharon Watts and former husband of Kathy Beale, was recognizable for his white hair and intense gaze during his time in Walford from 2015 to 2016. However, during his TV appearance, Paul appeared with less hair and wearing glasses.
Viewers were surprised by the transformation, sharing their reactions on Twitter. Comments ranged from astonishment at Paul’s aging to acknowledging his age, with one user noting that Paul Nicholas would soon turn 80 in December.
The iconic Fawlty Towers made its way to the West End stage, reviving the beloved TV show that aired from 1975 to 1979. Inspired by the real-life hotelier Donald Sinclair, the show focused on the outrageously rude behavior of the characters Basil and Sybil, created by John Cleese and Connie Booth.
