Accusations have been made against Kemi Badenoch for aligning with a fellow Conservative frontbencher who characterized a Muslim prayer event as an act of “domination,” drawing criticism for bringing the party into disrepute.
Pressure mounts on the Tory leader to dismiss Shadow Justice Secretary Nick Timothy after he denounced an Open Iftar gathering in Trafalgar Square, asserting it was unwelcome despite the venue regularly hosting events for diverse religious groups, including the annual Eid celebration since 2006. Timothy’s labeling of the public Muslim prayer as an “act of domination and division” sparked controversy.
In a recent statement on Times Radio, Badenoch, previously praising her colleague Timothy, echoed his sentiments, expressing concerns about the event’s impact on public space decorum. She emphasized the necessity of inclusive cultural practices, distinguishing between religious celebrations and public behavior guidelines. Badenoch called for a constructive dialogue within the Conservative Party on public prayer protocols.
Following Eid celebrations, Labour Party Chair Anna Turley criticized Badenoch’s stance, condemning the Tory leader for endorsing divisive views on public prayer. Turley accused Badenoch of steering the Conservative Party towards controversial territory by backing Timothy’s position, aligning with extremist views rather than promoting tolerance.
Sharing a video of the prayer event, which featured Sadiq Khan, Timothy reiterated his disapproval, stating that such rituals should be confined to mosques rather than public spaces, contrasting them with established religious events like Chanukah and Easter Sunday processions that are widely accepted in London.
