Keir Starmer has stated that there is no official assessment indicating that Iranian missiles are targeting the UK mainland.

Over the weekend, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) suggested that Tehran possesses weaponry capable of reaching major European cities like London, Paris, and Berlin. Recent reports revealed that Iran had aimed missiles at the Chagos Islands, located 3,300 miles away, while London sits approximately 2,700 miles from the Iranian capital.

When questioned about the potential threat to the UK, the Prime Minister emphasized the continuous security assessments conducted to safeguard the nation, clarifying that there is currently no indication of such targeting. He emphasized the paramount importance of prioritizing British interests and lives, highlighting the necessity for de-escalation and strategic planning regarding the Strait of Hormuz.

Recent events disclosed that Iran had launched two missiles towards the Diego Garcia UK/US joint base on the Chagos Island, with one missile falling short and the other being intercepted, although proximity details remain unclear.

Housing Minister Matthew Pennycook advised caution in interpreting Israel’s claims regarding Iran’s capabilities, emphasizing the government’s investments in air and missile defense to protect the country. He cautioned against accepting Israeli statements without considering their active involvement in the conflict.

The IDF reiterated the global threat posed by the Iranian regime, asserting that their missiles could now target major European cities. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu further warned of Iran’s capacity to reach deep into Europe.

Housing Secretary Steve Reed reassured the public of the country’s ability to defend itself both domestically and abroad, dismissing assessments supporting the IDF’s claims. He emphasized the government’s commitment to safeguarding the nation and its citizens.
