Scottish Food Company Enters Liquidation, 71 Jobs Lost

Published on

A prominent food company in the UK has gone into liquidation after operating for 35 years. Enterprise Foods Limited, a Scottish firm, facilitated the distribution of products for suppliers and producers to major retailers. The closure has resulted in 71 employees losing their jobs.

Based in East Kilbride, the company, trading as Localist, faced financial challenges due to the inability to refinance debts exceeding £5 million. George Lafferty of BTG was appointed as the provisional liquidator following a petition filed by the company.

The company had been struggling with cash-flow issues accumulated over time, mainly due to unpaid debts from failed customers and tough market conditions affecting the retail and hospitality industries. This collapse signifies the end of a longstanding Scottish foodservice business and highlights the ongoing pressures faced by companies in the sector.

Thomas McKay, managing partner of BTG in Scotland and Northern Ireland, mentioned that efforts were made by the directors to restructure the company’s debt to save the business and jobs, but unfortunately, job losses were inevitable. The liquidation will also impact small suppliers owed money by the company.

The focus now is on providing support to the affected employees to access financial entitlements and necessary assistance. This situation follows the recent administration of a UK airline that had been operational since 1997. Eastern Airways ceased operations in October before entering administration in November, citing unsustainable costs after the termination of a service contract with KLM. Administrators are working to salvage parts of Eastern Airways’ operations while maintaining the fleet.
