Published on

Olympic icon Tessa Sanderson shares her journey dealing with hearing impairment. The renowned British Olympian, the sole throwing event gold medalist, disclosed her gradual hearing loss spanning more than two decades, impacting her confidence as she struggled to comprehend conversations and feared public speaking mishaps.

Sanderson, who clinched the javelin gold at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, detailed her challenges, narrating how the onset of hearing difficulties in 2001 led to communication struggles and heightened anxiety in various settings. Despite receiving hearing aids in 2016, they proved ineffective, exacerbating her communication hurdles and self-consciousness, especially during public appearances and interviews.

The esteemed athlete, aged 70, residing in east London with her husband and adopted twins, emphasized the emotional toll of concealing her hearing issues while maintaining her high-profile roles. Sanderson’s advocacy stems from her personal experience, urging individuals with hearing impairments to persist with hearing aids to avoid social withdrawal and associated risks like isolation and cognitive decline.

Sanderson’s revelation of battling with distorted sounds and initial discomfort with her hearing aids resonates with the challenges faced by many users. Her perseverance in seeking alternative solutions led to a personalized hearing aid experience, significantly enhancing her confidence and overall well-being.

Medical experts, including TV doctor Hilary Jones, stress the importance of acclimating to hearing aids and providing necessary support for adjustment. Resources like Hidden Hearing’s “Fitted Isn’t Finished” initiative offer practical advice and guidance to aid individuals in maximizing the benefits of their hearing aids.

Laura Ewen, a prominent figure in audiology, emphasizes the common challenges faced by new hearing aid users and the importance of seeking professional assistance to ensure optimal functionality. Her advice underscores the need for patience, adjustments, and consistent wear to achieve successful outcomes in adapting to hearing aids.
