Hundreds Missing at Sea: Rohingya and Bangladeshi Nationals Vanish

Published on

At least 250 individuals are unaccounted for following a boat overturning en route to Malaysia. The missing persons, comprising Rohingya refugees and Bangladeshi nationals, encountered this tragic event in the Andaman Sea while heading towards Malaysia. The boat sinking incident’s exact timing and the status of search efforts remain uncertain as of Wednesday, April 15.

According to a joint statement from the United Nations’ refugee agency (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), a trawler departed from Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, carrying a significant number of passengers bound for Malaysia. The vessel’s loss of control and subsequent sinking were attributed to overcrowding, severe winds, and turbulent seas.

The UNHCR and IOM highlighted that the incident underscores the prolonged displacement of Rohingya individuals and the absence of viable solutions. Ongoing unrest in Myanmar’s Rakhine state has created uncertainty around the safe return of Rohingyas, leading to limited humanitarian aid, constrained access to education and employment in refugee camps, and driving vulnerable Rohingya refugees to undertake perilous sea journeys enticed by false promises of better prospects abroad.

Urging increased funding and global support, the UNHCR and IOM emphasized the need for lifesaving aid to Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, where over 1 million Rohingya individuals have sought shelter from Myanmar.
