A senior citizen from the United Kingdom has passed away following an incident where he was swept out to sea in Thailand. The 75-year-old man, hailing from Liverpool, was taken by a rip tide while his partner watched helplessly from the shore in Hua Hin. Despite efforts, he could not make it back to safety and was discovered by a fisherman near a pier around 4:30 pm local time on Wednesday.

According to Police Captain Prasong Jaturat, the man, who had previously lost his wife, lived with his children in England. The official mentioned that the man regularly swam alone in the mornings at the same spot, which typically had calm conditions. However, on the fateful Wednesday, the waves were strong, and he was the only person swimming. He entered the water close to the bay’s mouth, a channel used by boats heading to Chonburi, where the water is deep due to dredging for large vessels. Authorities believe he might have been caught in a rip current and pulled beneath the waves.

Hua Hin, located approximately three hours south of Bangkok, is a popular coastal destination known for its mix of white-sand beaches, upscale amenities like golf courses and wellness resorts, and attractions such as the historic railway station, vibrant night markets, and seafood eateries on old fishing piers over the water.

In a separate incident, a British man tragically lost his life in October 2024 after going swimming off the shores of Thailand, despite warnings communicated through red flags advising against entering the water. The 43-year-old businessman encountered a forceful rip tide at Karon Beach in Phuket, where whirlpools were visible on the surface. Despite efforts by lifeguards and paramedics, he could not be revived and passed away shortly after being brought ashore by a friend who raised the alarm.
