“Keir Starmer Faces Backlash Over Mandelson Security Clearance”

Published on

Questions regarding the security clearance of Peter Mandelson continue to trouble Keir Starmer as he gears up to address Members of Parliament.

The Prime Minister is scheduled to provide an update to the House of Commons regarding the recent disclosures concerning Lord Mandelson’s appointment.

A statement from No 10 following a meeting between Starmer and senior civil servants seemed to support the Prime Minister’s assertion that he was only informed on Tuesday about Mandelson being approved for his role as US Ambassador in Washington, despite security officials advising against it.

Expressing his anger, the Prime Minister described the failure to notify him as “astonishing.”

Conservative shadow Cabinet Office minister Alex Burghart hinted at a potential motion of no confidence, stating that the party would pick the right moment to act.

In an interview on Sky News, Burghart questioned the Prime Minister’s credibility and accountability, emphasizing that the responsibility ultimately falls on him for the controversial appointment.

Regarding the association between Mandelson and Jeffrey Epstein, Technology Secretary Liz Kendall raised concerns about the victims of Epstein and whether the Prime Minister had overlooked their plight.

Kendall defended Sir Keir Starmer, stating that the Prime Minister has consistently made sound decisions on critical issues facing the nation, thereby justifying why he should not be ousted over the Mandelson scandal.

Kendall criticized the Foreign Office for failing to inform Starmer and the then-Foreign Secretary David Lammy about Mandelson’s security vetting failure, emphasizing the misstep in not disclosing this crucial information.

As Keir Starmer braces for a challenging week, he is expected to address the House of Commons on the latest developments surrounding Lord Mandelson’s appointment.

Blame has been directed at the Foreign Office for granting clearance to Mandelson in January 2025 to assume the role of US ambassador, despite his failure in the security vetting process.

The Prime Minister’s reaction to the situation has been one of fury, describing the lack of communication as “astounding.”
