Carey Mulligan Criticizes Surge in Cosmetic Procedures

Published on

Carey Mulligan has criticized the surge in cosmetic procedures and injectables, attributing social media for making these treatments easily accessible and fueling an unhealthy obsession with appearance. The 40-year-old Academy Award nominee expressed concerns this week about the growing difficulty in resisting the pressure to modify one’s looks due to online influences and the constant promotion from the beauty industry.

“In today’s society, there is a heightened level of scrutiny regarding the aspects we believe can be altered because of the availability of options,” she remarked. “In the past, there wasn’t the opportunity to enhance oneself.”

Mulligan highlighted the impact of filtered images and digitally altered photos on people’s perceptions of beauty, noting that many individuals view these images as natural representations, which often is not the case.

During a conversation on the Skip Intro podcast, the mother of three, married to Mumford & Sons frontman Marcus Mumford, emphasized the continuous cycle of seeking solutions through cosmetic interventions, which she described as a futile attempt to find happiness. She emphasized that comparison leads to dissatisfaction and that altering one’s appearance does not guarantee genuine contentment.

The acclaimed actress further stated that the current era, dominated by social media and the beauty industry, poses significant challenges. She acknowledged the prevalence of cosmetic enhancements but stressed that true happiness stems from other aspects of life rather than physical alterations.

Mulligan referenced a humorous meme illustrating a disconnect between trivial beauty concerns and larger societal issues, symbolized by a Barbie doll nonchalantly discussing beauty treatments while the world burns in the background. She criticized the excessive focus on cosmetic procedures in contemporary discourse.

Regarding microneedling, a minimally invasive technique that stimulates collagen production, Mulligan shared her insights on the industry’s influence, particularly after portraying a character fixated on appearance in the recently premiered Netflix series, Beef season 2.

Reflecting on her role in the series, Mulligan delved into the character’s lack of self-acceptance and identity, attributing it to societal pressures and fear of aging. She highlighted the pervasive anxiety surrounding physical changes and the relentless pursuit of perfection.

In a revealing anecdote, the Promising Young Woman star recounted being offered Botox at a young age, underscoring the industry’s eagerness to promote cosmetic interventions even to individuals in their early twenties.
