A couple who underwent in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment and ended up with the wrong baby have located the biological parents of their daughter. Tiffany Score and Steven Mills gave birth to a baby girl in December last year through a fertility clinic in Orlando, Florida. However, they discovered that the child, named Shea, was not biologically related to them. Subsequently, they filed a lawsuit against the clinic and Dr. Milton McNichol for negligence. Following public disclosure of the mix-up, another couple who had been clients at the same clinic came forward suspecting that their embryo might have been mistakenly transferred.
Both families agreed to DNA testing, which confirmed that the other couple were the genetic parents of the baby. Despite their strong emotional bond with Shea, Tiffany and Steven feel obligated to give the biological parents a chance to claim their daughter. If the second family opts not to take custody of the child, Tiffany and Steven have expressed their commitment to raising her themselves.
The couple’s lawyers released a statement acknowledging the closure of the Fertility Center of Orlando, which had been facing legal and financial challenges. The clinic had been cooperating with an investigation to determine the cause of the error that led to the birth of a child not genetically related to the intended parents. The situation has raised new unresolved issues, including the fate of the couple’s own embryos.
