A British host and DJ revealed that he experienced a severe reaction to prescribed medication, leading to a temporary paralysis and loss of speech. Ryan Swain, known for his radio show in Yorkshire, encountered a life-threatening situation after his medication dosage was increased. The medication, Duloxetine, was intended to manage his motor tics related to Tourette’s Syndrome but unexpectedly caused his entire body to stiffen. This resulted in seizure-like episodes, chronic pain, and an inability to communicate.
Describing his ordeal to Creator Zine, Ryan expressed feeling like his body was shutting down uncontrollably shortly after upping his dosage from 30mg to 60mg. Initially noticing symptoms such as profuse sweating, zoning out, and extreme muscle tension in early April, the 36-year-old sought medical help. His general practitioner suspected Serotonin Syndrome or Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome, both potentially life-threatening conditions caused by medication reactions.
Ryan was swiftly hospitalized for five days, undergoing various tests by specialist teams including neurologists and mental health professionals. He commended the dedicated and supportive care he received but highlighted the lack of understanding regarding medication reactions.
Even after the incident, Ryan continues to struggle with impaired mobility, finding simple tasks overwhelming. He described his emotions as fluctuating and his movements as slow and painful, experiencing memory and coordination issues. Reflecting on his experience, Ryan emphasized the importance of recognizing warning signs and understanding the potential risks associated with prescribed medication.
In addition to his existing advocacy for mental health and ADHD awareness, Ryan aims to raise awareness about the hazards of insufficiently comprehending prescribed medication and the dangers of mixing medications.
