Approximately 57,000 delighted runners are set to complete the London Marathon this Sunday. Among the diverse group of participants, including professional athletes, celebrities, fun-runners, and newcomers, stand six exceptional individuals known as the ‘Ever Presents.’ These remarkable men have successfully finished all 46 marathons since the inaugural event in March 1981.
Formed in 1996 after completing their 15th consecutive race, the Ever Presents, originally consisting of 42 members, made a commitment to continue running as long as physically possible. Despite facing health issues and injuries over the years, the group has dwindled down to just six dedicated members today.
With a collective age of 465, half of them in their 80s, the group comprises retired professionals such as 84-year-old GP Mac Speake, 80-year-old teacher Bill O’Connor, 80-year-old retired training adviser David Walker, 78-year-old retired IT consultant Jeff Aston, 76-year-old retired headteacher Mike Peace, and the youngest member at 67, retired school bursar Chris Finill.
The Ever Presents have witnessed the London Marathon’s transformation from a small event with 7,000 runners to its current status as a massive spectacle. The race’s popularity has surged, with over a million applicants this year, leading to speculation that it may expand to a two-day event by 2027 to accommodate over 100,000 runners.
Although the group lacks female representation, the increasing number of women participants reflects the sport’s evolution from 1981 when only 300 women ran. Today, nearly half of the runners are women, highlighting the sport’s progress.
Reflecting on their enduring commitment, the Ever Presents emphasize the evolving perception of marathon running from a niche pursuit to a widely embraced challenge. Each member faces personal obstacles, yet they persist, driven by camaraderie, charity support, and personal fulfillment.
The Ever Presents, supported by their families over the years, share a bond forged through perseverance and shared experiences. Treasuring their marathon mementos and unique stories, the group remains dedicated to completing each race despite the challenges that come with age and physical limitations.
Recognized for their remarkable achievement, the Ever Presents hold a special place in London Marathon history, embodying the spirit of commitment and unity that defined the event’s inception. As they prepare for another marathon, their enduring dedication serves as an inspiration to all participants and spectators alike.
