Prince Harry has recently visited Bucha in Ukraine, where numerous landmines were left by Russian forces following a tragic incident. The Duke of Sussex has been touring Ukraine, meeting with individuals impacted by the prolonged conflict and engaging in discussions with political figures in Kyiv.
During his visit to Bucha, Harry witnessed the aftermath of a massacre that occurred in April 2022, resulting in the deaths of numerous Ukrainian civilians and prisoners of war when Russian troops retreated from the area.
After the departure of Russian soldiers, a significant number of unexploded landmines were scattered across the region, necessitating a prolonged cleanup effort. Harry emphasized the extensive cleanup required in the area, estimating that it could extend for several decades.
In response to the landmine threat, Ukrainian forces swiftly developed new technologies to address modern warfare challenges. While in Bucha, Harry observed the use of innovative tools such as a robotic dog named Spot, AI-powered drones controlled remotely, and virtual reality goggles.
Speaking to ITV News, Harry commended the humanitarian work of the Halo Trust, drawing parallels between his Ukraine visit and Princess Diana’s advocacy against landmines in Angola. He highlighted the transformation in mine clearance efforts through advanced technology, making the process more efficient and safer.
Having previously walked through minefields in Angola, Harry retraced his mother’s footsteps in Ukraine, emphasizing the importance of Halo Trust’s operations in ensuring safety in the region. He lauded the progress in mine clearance techniques, noting the shift towards using drones, artificial intelligence, and robots for enhanced precision and protection.
