“Iconic 1966 World Cup Ball Returns Home After 30-Year Saga”

Published on

30 years have passed since the Mirror played a pivotal role in bringing home a symbol of England’s historic World Cup victory in 1966. Geoff Hurst’s iconic hat-trick, including three strikes with the legendary Slazenger ball against Germany, secured England’s first and only World Cup triumph. However, the ball ended up in the possession of German player Helmut Haller after the chaotic aftermath of the final.

The ball’s return sparked a sensational tabloid saga involving skullduggery, helicopter pursuits, and a hefty sum of approximately £80,000 to repatriate it from Haller, who was hounded by global media outlets. In 1996, Haller, who had passed away in 2012, met with the Mirror at Heathrow Airport, surrounded by journalists demanding the return of the cherished ball that he had gifted to his son Jurgen for his 5th birthday.

Throughout April 1996, the Mirror tirelessly worked to retrieve the ball, which was eventually handed back to Hurst, the hero of the historic match, on April 26, 1996. The ball now resides in the National Football Museum, safeguarded from direct light to preserve its distinctive ‘orange glow.’

The priceless artifact, symbolizing one of the most legendary football moments of all time, is meticulously cared for by Wiebke Cullen, the Collections Manager at the National Football Museum. Cullen emphasized the irreplaceable value of the 1966 Ball, highlighting the stringent security measures in place to protect it, including government indemnity coverage and stringent environmental controls.

Despite debates over the legitimacy of England’s controversial second goal, the ball remains a cherished relic, attracting countless enthusiasts to the museum. As a symbol of footballing history, the 1966 Ball continues to captivate fans, embodying the spirit of that unforgettable World Cup victory.
