Airline CEO Warns of Flight Cancellations Amid Fuel Crisis

Published on

The CEO of a major airline has issued a warning about upcoming flight cancellations as the company had to scrap certain UK routes. Eivind Roald, CEO of Norse Atlantic Airways, recently canceled flights from London Gatwick Airport to Los Angeles due to a significant surge in jet fuel prices. This action was taken in response to a more than 100% increase in fuel costs over a short period.

Numerous airlines globally have been compelled to cancel flights due to Iran’s control of the critical Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global supplies. Concurrently, Donald Trump has directed the US Navy to block Iranian ports, exacerbating the situation.

In an interview with BBC Newsnight, Mr. Roald mentioned that he foresees more flight cancellations across the industry. While Norse Atlantic plans to continue operating flights from London Gatwick, Athens, and Rome without additional cancellations, he anticipates competitors may face further disruptions, especially in short-haul European routes.

Following the cancellation of London-Los Angeles flights, Norse Atlantic stated that the decision was a result of an unforeseen global fuel crisis to mitigate high fuel risk exposure. The airline expressed regret for any inconvenience caused to passengers and assured them of assistance with revised travel plans.

In response to mounting concerns over jet fuel shortages and potential flight disruptions, the UK Government issued a statement addressing the situation. The Department for Transport acted following alerts from the European Union regarding the ongoing challenges in the aviation sector.

EU energy commissioner Dan Jorgensen remarked that holiday plans for many individuals could be impacted by flight cancellations or exorbitant ticket prices. The Department for Transport has issued specific guidance to passengers traveling with various carriers, including Jet2, Ryanair, Wizz, easyJet, and British Airways, advising them not to alter their travel arrangements at present.

Passengers are reassured that UK airlines procure jet fuel in advance, and airports maintain sufficient fuel stocks to ensure operational resilience. Collaborating closely with the aviation industry, the government aims to monitor risks and minimize disruptions for passengers.

In case of flight cancellations, passengers are reminded of their legal entitlements, including the right to a full refund or alternative routing. Additional information on the current situation and its implications for travelers can be found in a provided factsheet.
