A long-serving supermarket manager, after being fired for confronting a violent shoplifter, is receiving widespread community support. Sean Egan, 46, who had dedicated 29 years to the supermarket, faced a life-altering situation when he intervened to stop a known shoplifter from leaving the store. The local community in Aldridge, near Walsall, has united to show solidarity with Egan by organizing a protest outside Morrisons.
During an altercation with career criminal Daniel Kendall inside the Morrisons store, Kendall spat in Egan’s face and became aggressive. Supporters of the loyal manager have initiated a fundraiser and are planning a demonstration against his dismissal. A peaceful protest is scheduled to occur outside Morrisons Aldridge on April 25, between 9am and midday, with a banner urging the supermarket to reinstate Sean Egan, highlighting his charitable contributions to the community.
Following a disciplinary hearing related to the incident with Kendall, Egan, a resident of Wolverhampton, was terminated for not adhering to the company’s policy of deterring, not detaining shoplifters. Egan, who started his career at Morrisons behind the deli counter during his school days, stated that he initially followed protocol with a calm approach before Kendall’s aggressive behavior.
In an interview with the Daily Mail, Egan expressed his disappointment, saying he only aimed to protect himself, customers, and the company. He felt unfairly treated compared to Kendall, stating that his life had been severely impacted since the incident. Morrisons emphasized their commitment to ensuring the safety of colleagues and customers, stressing the importance of following strict procedures to prevent harm, especially in incidents involving shoplifting or violence.
