“NHS Misdiagnosis Leads to Father’s Leg Amputation”

Published on

A father shared his experience of undergoing a significant amputation following a misdiagnosis at an NHS hospital. Ron Bigwood, residing in Chelmsford, Essex, sought medical help in September 2014 for intense pain in his right calf. Despite consultations at NHS Broomfield Hospital, he was misdiagnosed, leading to ineffective treatment and the eventual amputation of his right leg below the knee.

Following a series of legal proceedings, Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust acknowledged 95% liability for the incident, resulting in a substantial financial settlement for Ron. Initially diagnosed with a severe circulation condition in November 2014, Ron’s condition deteriorated due to a blood clot that should have been managed with medication rather than surgery, according to his legal representatives at Irwin Mitchell.

Despite undergoing an angioplasty in February 2015 to address the clot, Ron’s health worsened, causing severe pain and foot tissue damage. Subsequent medical interventions failed, culminating in the amputation of his right leg on June 1 of the same year. The Trust later admitted multiple errors in Ron’s care, including the misdiagnosis, inappropriate treatment decisions, inadequate consent procedures, and negligent surgical procedures that led to the avoidable amputation.

Formerly leading an active and independent lifestyle, Ron now faces daily challenges and relies on assistance for various tasks due to his amputation-related difficulties. Coping with persistent pain and mobility issues, Ron highlighted the ongoing struggles he faces, emphasizing the importance of family support while expressing a desire to regain independence through rehabilitation.

Irwin Mitchell confirmed that interim payments, amounting to a substantial six-figure sum, will facilitate Ron’s rehabilitation, prosthetic care, and necessary home modifications. With April designated as Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month, Ron hopes to raise awareness about the repercussions of misdiagnosed conditions and encourage learning from medical mistakes to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Legal counsel Louise Forsyth from Irwin Mitchell emphasized the profound impact of Ron’s injury on his life, stressing the significance of correct diagnosis and effective treatment pathways in preventing irreversible consequences. Securing essential financial support for Ron’s recovery journey, Forsyth underscored the critical role of specialized rehabilitation and home adaptations in promoting Ron’s independence and well-being.

Ron’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the life-altering effects of vascular care issues and underscores the imperative of enhancing patient safety through continuous learning and improvement within the healthcare system.
