Thousands of individuals are participating in the London Marathon today, aiming to complete the challenging 26-mile course. Among the members of the Royal Family, Princess Beatrice stands out as the only one who has not only run the race but also set a record in the process. In 2010, Princess Beatrice, alongside 33 other runners including her then-boyfriend Dave Clarke and friends Sam and Holly Branson, ran while connected together like a human caterpillar to support her mother’s charity, Children in Crisis.
Dressed in a fluorescent tutu and sweatbands, Princess Beatrice joyfully displayed her medal at the finish line. Their group achieved a remarkable feat by breaking the record for the largest number of people to finish a marathon while bound together.
While Prince and Princess of Wales have not participated in the marathon, they made a notable appearance at the event in 2017. The royal couple showed their support for the ‘Heads Together’ mental health charity by cheering on runners at a water station. Despite offering high-fives and taking selfies with the crowd, they were playfully squirted with water by mischievous runners.
Expressing her interest in running the marathon, Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, revealed that security concerns prevent her from doing so. On the other hand, Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, joined a portion of the marathon in 2020, running 1.5 miles in heavy rain alongside a fellow runner fundraising for Mencap, a charity she actively supports.
As the London Marathon unfolds from Greenwich to Westminster, more than 50,000 runners are anticipated to tackle the challenging course, passing by iconic landmarks such as Buckingham Palace, the Cutty Sark, and Tower Bridge. Spectators are expected to line the streets, adding to the vibrant atmosphere of the event.
