Surveillance footage captured the moment a suspect dashed through the hotel lobby during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner before being subdued by secret service agents.
The individual involved, identified as Cole Tomas Allen, aged 31 and hailing from Torrance, California, was armed with firearms and knives when he entered the Washington Hilton on Saturday night.
A video shared by Donald Trump on Truth Social captured the suspect bypassing security barricades as secret service agents swiftly responded to the situation.
Although one officer sustained a shot to a bullet-resistant vest, the assailant was apprehended without injuries and is currently under evaluation at a hospital, according to authorities.
Allen has been taken into custody and is facing multiple firearm-related charges, including assaulting an officer with a deadly weapon.
Officials confirmed that the suspect, who was a guest at the Washington Hilton hosting the dinner, will appear in court on Monday. While law enforcement believes he acted alone and targeted no specific individual, they have not disclosed a motive for the incident.
Following the commotion, Trump was safely escorted off the stage as secret service agents, including the heavily-armed counter assault team, swiftly intervened.
Vice President JD Vance was the first to be removed from the premises, with agents providing cover for Trump and Melania Trump before guiding them away. Trump experienced a brief stumble before regaining composure with the assistance of his security detail.
After being held in the secure presidential suite, Trump was eventually advised by the secret service to return to the White House, prompting the event organizers to temporarily suspend activities and make necessary adjustments before his departure.
Reflecting on the incident at the White House, Trump, still attired in his tuxedo, remarked, “When you’re impactful, they go after you. When you’re not impactful, they leave you alone,” suggesting that the suspect may have acted independently.
The shooting occurred just outside the grand ballroom where the dinner was being held, prompting immediate concerns about security measures at an event attended annually by high-ranking government officials.
Trump expressed hope for rescheduling the event within 30 days, underscoring the need for enhanced security following the breach that allowed an armed individual to approach the ballroom, raising questions about event safety protocols.
