“I Don’t Like Mondays”: The Legacy of America’s First School Shooter

Published on

A tragic event that shook the nation in 1979 was the shooting at Cleveland Elementary School by 16-year-old Brenda Spencer, immortalized in the Boomtown Rats’ hit song “I Don’t Like Mondays.” This incident marked a dark turning point, as school shootings have unfortunately become alarmingly common in the US, with an average of 79 per year since 2020.

N Leigh Hunt, a renowned crime historian and author of the book “I Don’t Like Mondays – The True Story Behind America’s First Modern School Shooting,” underlines the impact of Spencer’s actions in coining the term “school shooter.” Hunt, who had personal ties to San Diego where the tragedy occurred, vividly recalls the day of the shooting and the chilling phone call made to the authorities by Spencer herself.

Since Spencer’s heinous act, there have been over 1,300 reported school shooter incidents in the US, including notorious tragedies like the Columbine High School massacre and the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. The prevalence of these incidents has led to the implementation of lockdown drills and heightened security measures in schools across the country.

Despite the international success of the song “I Don’t Like Mondays,” written by Bob Geldof and The Boomtown Rats in response to Spencer’s crime, the band failed to achieve lasting fame in the US. Meanwhile, Spencer, now serving a life sentence in prison, has shown signs of rehabilitation through various programs and vocational training.

As the world continues to grapple with the repercussions of school shootings, Hunt reflects on Spencer’s legacy and the enduring impact of her actions. The story of Brenda Spencer, the first school shooter in modern American history, remains a haunting reminder of the tragic consequences of such violence.
