“House of Commons to Debate Probe into PM’s Mandelson Controversy”

Published on

Keir Starmer is set to face a critical challenge in the House of Commons regarding the Peter Mandelson controversy, with Members of Parliament scheduled to vote on whether a parliamentary ethics investigation should be initiated. Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle has confirmed that a debate will take place tomorrow to decide whether the Prime Minister should be referred to the influential Privileges Committee, similar to the investigation into Boris Johnson’s Partygate affair. Despite the unlikelihood of the vote passing due to Labour’s significant majority, the pressure on the Prime Minister continues to intensify amidst ongoing speculations about his political future.

Sir Lindsay disclosed that he had received numerous letters from MPs of various political affiliations on the matter. He emphasized that his role is to determine whether a case warrants consideration by the House itself, rather than to ascertain potential contempt charges. He stated, “I have decided to allow the House to collectively contemplate whether the Committee of Privileges should address the issue. It is not within my purview to make any definitive judgments.”

Former Labour figures Alan Johnson and David Blunkett have criticized the move as a politically motivated maneuver ahead of the upcoming local elections. They pointed out the disparity between the current situation and the previous referral of Boris Johnson to the privileges committee, where a police investigation had already contradicted his claims regarding lockdown rule violations.

Emily Thornberry, chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee overseeing the Mandelson vetting inquiry, questioned the timing and motives behind the current proceedings, suggesting that some may be seeking to gain advantage before the local elections.

Opposition parties have accused the Prime Minister of providing misleading information to Parliament regarding the vetting process for Lord Mandelson’s appointment as US ambassador. However, Keir Starmer has maintained that he was not informed by officials about security clearance concerns related to the peer before his assignment to Washington.

Following revelations last week, the PM removed Foreign Office chief Sir Olly Robbins from his position after reports emerged that UK Security Vetting had raised reservations about granting top-level clearance to Lord Mandelson.

In his testimony, Sir Olly criticized Downing Street for disregarding the vetting process and exerting pressure on the Foreign Office to approve the appointment. Notably, he clarified that he did not inform the PM about the vetting issues concerning Lord Mandelson, a point the PM asserts clears him of any accusations of dishonesty towards MPs.
