“Keir Starmer Optimistic on UK Shoplifting Progress”

Published on

Keir Starmer has expressed optimism about progress being made in addressing the widespread issue of shoplifting in the UK.

During a speech at the USDAW trade union conference, the Prime Minister condemned the threats and violence faced by retail staff, emphasizing the need for increased protection. He shared his dismay over a letter he received detailing a woman’s experience of racist abuse while working in a shop.

The Prime Minister vowed to take decisive action, stating, “We’re not going to offer inadequate solutions.” Recent data from the Office for National Statistics indicated a slight decrease in shoplifting incidents in 2025, following a previous surge to record levels. Despite this decline, there were still approximately 510,000 reported cases within a year.

According to Home Office figures, the overall charge rate for shoplifting suspects rose by 17%, attributed to heightened patrols in town centers. The Prime Minister highlighted forthcoming legislation in Parliament that will classify mistreating and attacking retail employees as specific criminal offenses.

He acknowledged the magnitude of the challenge but pointed out the 17% increase in the number of individuals being charged, suggesting a potential shift in the tide against shoplifting. The Prime Minister also mentioned the successful implementation of technology in some areas, leading to a doubling of shoplifters being apprehended.

Referencing a personal account from a supermarket worker named Finnola who endured racial abuse at work, the Prime Minister reassured her that her ordeal was acknowledged and condemned.
